5 Signs of a potential toxic work environment

The opportunity to become part of a new workplace team is always exciting. However, the newfound enthusiasm can easily turn into resentment and frustration over time. Toxic work environments are rarely in a vacuum; they often present signs of discord. Before you accept the job offer, it may benefit you to do some research. Here are five examples of warnings that may indicate a toxic work environment:

1.Negative Comments on social media

Comments from staff and especially supervisors may indicate a hostile work atmosphere that is inflexible or incohesive. Job sites such as glassdoor.com are excellent sources for company reviews.

2. Negative consumer comments/reviews

Pay close attention to what customers say about your potential new organization. outward displays of arguments, physical altercations, and disorganization among staff, in the presence of customers, shows weakness in policy and leadership. Poor service and lack of effort will also reflect on leadership.

3. High Turnover Rate

If you discover that either your new potential position, or other jobs in the new company are experiencing high turnover rates, you may have cause for concern. High turnover rates may be signs of overall dissatisfaction with the company, poor benefits, or a lack of career growth opportunities.

4. Poor Organizational Structure

A company's organizational structure often provides the foundation for success. A poor organizational structure, however, can become a breeding ground for overworked managers and employees, leading to negativity and decreased output.

5. Inappropriate Behavior by the Interviewer

An interviewer who arrives late without apology, is unprepared or makes negative comments about current employees are red flags! If the interviewer conducts this way, there is no telling how the organization is ran.

In short, researching your new potential job can not only gives you a competitive edge against other candidates, but can also be the deciding factor when taking that offer. Do your homework!
